Current Programme

Arts Lab has something for everyone. With enthusiasm to create and build together, we are a valuable resource for all ages and abilities. The Lab has an evolving programme of workshops, exhibitions, talks and Artists’ Collective Evenings that makes the most of our spacious studio on the fabulous Dartington estate together with a growing team of professional arts facilitators. All profits from these workshops are reinvested to support creative opportunities and learning for those who are financially challenged. This enables Arts Lab to work towards fulfilling its aspirations of a meaningful social impact.

Weekly 2-hour workshop for everyone: MAKING MONDAYS during Monday lunchtimes. Fun and relaxing workshops for both beginners and experienced artists. These sessions guide you in playful experiments in drawing, painting and collage. A great chance to meet people and enjoy building creative confidence with SaraDownham-Lotto. Sara is the founder and creative director of Arts Lab and has had over 30 years’ experience exhibiting and teaching in the UK and abroad.

When: Mondays 12.30-2.30pm  –  Jan 8th, 15th, 22nd, 29th; Feb 5th, 12th, 19th

Monthly evenings for artists of all levels: ARTISTS’ COLLECTIVE. Meet other artists over shared food with informal group crits about your ideas &/ artwork. Join us for talks, films, opportunities to exhibit, to collaborate or to build our team of facilitators, mentors & interns.

This is for you if ………

you are an artist for whom remaining creative and innovative is important

you studied in the arts some time ago and have either stopped being creative or struggle to remain inspired

you are a recent arts graduate adjusting to life outside college

you are currently an arts undergraduate or an art foundation student

you are studying creative subjects at A level or GCSE and seriously considering art college

you have no arts qualifications but are nonetheless enthusiastic or ambitious for creative practice to be integral to your life

When: 1st Tuesday of every month 5-8pm  Jan 9th, Feb 6th, Mar 6th

Cost: £5 plus food to share   no need to book, just turn up

Monthly whole day workshop for everyone: SASSY SECOND SATURDAYS. For beginners and experienced artists, this course is an extended fun and relaxing Making Mondays to build creative confidence through drawing, painting and collage with SaraDownham-Lotto. Sara is the director of Arts Lab and has had over 30 years’ experience exhibiting and teaching in the UK and abroad.

When: 10am-4pm every 2nd Saturday of each month  Jan 13th, Feb 10th, March 10th

Radio Listening for all: MIDDAY ARTS TALK with Sound Art Radio – live radio conversation between artists and makers (Arts Lab and others). Listen live online or tune in to 102.5 FM if you are in the Totnes area of Devon   12-1.00pm 15th & 29th January; 12th & 26th February   FREE

Special weekend workshop for artists of all levels: WHAT THEY DON’T TELL YOU AT ART COLLEGE with Stephen Park. Weekend practical courses to help you survive and flourish as an artist. This course aims to equip you with a metaphorical road map and compass. It’s about action, creative flow, resilience and other animals; what they don’t tell you at art college and how to know what to do next. “Through my experience with artists and working in art colleges around the country, I have useful observations and insights which I look forward to sharing at Arts Lab.”  Stephen was closely involved with the Dartmoor Arts Summer School since its inception in 2006, and throughout his career taught and delivered workshops at various places including The Royal College of Art. (For more information see Creativity sweet spot for artists)

Special Saturday workshop for everyone: PAPER STRUCTURES. One day workshop with Helen Snell. A chance to explore and develop a range of paper sculpture techniques, looking at net design, cutting, folding and joining to develop a piece of wearable sculpture. Participants will create their own paper sculpture during the day to be sited, lit and photographed in the studio or in the Dartington Grounds (weather permitting)

Special Saturday workshop for everyone: IT’S IN THE DOODLE. One day workshop with artist/illustrator Claudia Schmid. “Doodling is something many people who wouldn’t consider themselves as artists enjoy doing. Doodles are pieces of art in themselves or they can be a source from which one can extract ideas that are developed further.” Claudia has spent many years doing just that and in this workshop will take participants through the steps of doodling – examining – extracting – transforming. Anyone who enjoys doodling and/or is curious how to create artwork starting from doodles is welcome – no previous skills needed.

Special weekend workshop for artists of all levels: DO BE DO BE DO, THE TOUCHING EYE. 2 day workshop with Jonathan McCree . “Weaving together drawing, movement and film making, we will explore how artists and spectators make and experience art with their bodies. Blurring distinctions between movement, dance and drawing, we invite the question, ‘what if the outcome of a graphic process is not an object?’”

SHAPING OPPORTUNITIES – YOUNG PEOPLE WORKING ALONGSIDE PROFESSIONAL ARTISTS. Empowering and inspiring experimental mixed and multimedia workshops for young people. A chance to explore and experiment in a spacious, welcoming studio with professional artists with a breadth of experience working with young people. We promote the fun and freedom of making art independently and with each other. Arts Lab is a great space in a fantastic location with great people!

Who for: all 12-25 year olds

ART FOR MENTAL HEALTH AND WELLBEING. We offer creative workshops in a safe, welcoming and non-judgemental environment. Exploring and experimenting freely with a range of art materials, the sessions are very much participant led, with guidance from a professional artist. Much of the work is based on individual responses to music, the beautiful gardens of the Dartington estate and original art in the studio. Creating at times collaboratively, in small groups and independently, the pace varies and embraces what those in the group want to follow or express on the day.

Who for: carers, family, friends and individuals affected by or recovering from mental health

LEARN ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE THROUGH ART. If English isn’t your first language, here’s a chance to learn everyday English while having some creative fun in an artists’ studio on the beautiful Dartington Hall estate. Any level is welcome and you don’t have to be good at art. We will get you speaking, thinking and dreaming in English! Your tutor is a professional artist with EFL training. Arts Lab is dedicated to student-centred learning and the benefits of learning through activities that interest and excite everyone.

Who for: students of English as a second language of any age

TEAM-BUILDING. We offer you the opportunity to work with professional artists and experienced facilitators for some shared fun and a confidence-boost. Our activities help you to think and do outside the box and take creative risks. We believe in the benefits of play and creative thinking and making for everyone. Skill development in problem solving and collaboration is an outcome, as well as some beautiful art.

Who for: staff groups in businesses, schools and colleges
