Arts Lab has something for everyone. With enthusiasm to create and build together, we are a valuable resource for all ages and abilities. The Lab has an evolving programme of workshops, exhibitions, talks and Artists’ Collective Evenings that makes the most of our spacious studio on the fabulous Dartington estate together with a growing team of experienced artists and arts facilitators. Days welcoming drop-in visits to the Lab’s information area with posters and brochures telling you all about the project. Our artists and volunteers may be working, but feel free to come by.

LET’S TALK ABOUT ART AS THOUGH IT MATTERED with Stuart Voaden

For everyone

Friday 4th – Sunday 6th May

10am – 4pm daily

A weekend with artist/maker Stuart Voaden. The painting-filled studio of Arts Lab will prompt informal discussion around engaging with and understanding art. Open to all, especially those who know they love art but not sure why or what it means. Invitation is to come to any or all of the following:

  • Friday and Sunday – FREE – Open Exhibtion and meet the artist
  • Friday 6-8pm – FREE – evening opening celebration
  • Saturday 10am – 1pm – £15 – Booking essential. Guided informal discussion workshop with option to develop Arts Lab manifesto in the afternoon.

MAKING MONDAYS with Sara Downham-Lotto

For everyone (16+)

Mondays 12.30 – 2.30 April 23rd, 30th; May 7th, 14th, 21st; June 4th, 11th, 18th, 25th; July 2nd, 9th

Fun and relaxing workshops for both beginners and experienced artists. Guidance in playful experiments in drawing, painting and collage with an abstract artist. A chance to meet people and enjoy building creative confidence.

AFTER SCHOOL JUNIOR ARTS LAB with Sophy D’Angelo

For 8-13 year olds

Mondays 4.30 – 6.15pm April 23rd, 30th; May 7th, 14th, 21st; June 4th, 11th, 18th, 25th; July 2nd, 9th, 16th

After school art club for 8-13 year olds with Sophy D’Angelo. Developing ideas and talents in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere, students learn new skills and experiment with mixed media. The work created this term will be part of an exhibition at Arts Lab in July!

YOUNG ARTIST DAY with Mia-Violet Leech

Thursdays – May 10th, June 7th, July 5th

11am – 5pm

£3 suggested donation

Young artist-run day for and with other young creatives, based solely on hosting and promoting their work. An amazing platform for us to blossom, learn and show.

SASSY SATURDAYS with Sara Downham-Lotto

Colourful and lively whole-day immersive experience building creative confidence through drawing, painting and collage with abstract artist Sara Downham-Lotto.

INTERGENERATIONAL DAY OF MAKING & SENSORY PLAY

An open-for-all afternoon of making and sensory play with local young artist Mia-Violet Leech and co. Experimenting with a range of interactive mediums for all ages, abilities and members of the community to engage with!

Meet other artists over shared food for informal chat about artwork and ideas. Join us for tonight’s talk – Sophy D’Angelo on ‘The Art of Invitation’ and Sara Downham-Lotto on ‘The Story of Arts Lab’.

PAPER STRUCTURES with Helen Snell

A chance to explore and develop a range of paper sculpture techniques with Helen Snell. CREATURES IN THE DRAW(ERS) with Claudia Schmid & Diana Collins

Claudia Schmid and Diana Collins are artists who use the doodle and invented imagery in  their practices. They invite you to join in the process of drawing, using creative methods to help unlock playful discovery.

IT’S IN THE DOODLE with Claudia Schmid

Anyone who enjoys doodling and/or is curious how to create artwork starting from doodles is welcome – no previous skills needed. In this workshop, Claudia Schmid takes participants through the steps – examining – extracting – transforming.

SHAPING OPPORTUNITIES – YOUNG PEOPLE WORKING ALONGSIDE PROFESSIONAL ARTISTS. Empowering and inspiring experimental mixed and multimedia workshops for young people. A chance to explore and experiment in a spacious, welcoming studio with professional artists with a breadth of experience working with young people. We promote the fun and freedom of making art independently and with each other. Arts Lab is a great space in a fantastic location with great people!

Who for: all 12-25 year olds

ART FOR MENTAL HEALTH AND WELLBEING. We offer creative workshops in a safe, welcoming and non-judgemental environment. Exploring and experimenting freely with a range of art materials, the sessions are very much participant led, with guidance from a professional artist. Much of the work is based on individual responses to music, the beautiful gardens of the Dartington estate and original art in the studio. Creating at times collaboratively, in small groups and independently, the pace varies and embraces what those in the group want to follow or express on the day.

Who for: carers, family, friends and individuals affected by or recovering from mental health

LEARN ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE THROUGH ART. If English isn’t your first language, here’s a chance to learn everyday English while having some creative fun in an artists’ studio on the beautiful Dartington Hall estate. Any level is welcome and you don’t have to be good at art. We will get you speaking, thinking and dreaming in English! Your tutor is a professional artist with EFL training. Arts Lab is dedicated to student-centred learning and the benefits of learning through activities that interest and excite everyone.

Who for: students of English as a second language of any age

TEAM-BUILDING. We offer you the opportunity to work with professional artists and experienced facilitators for some shared fun and a confidence-boost. Our activities help you to think and do outside the box and take creative risks. We believe in the benefits of play and creative thinking and making for everyone. Skill development in problem solving and collaboration is an outcome, as well as some beautiful art.
