A rare opportunity to see artwork made by prisoners at HMP Dartmoor as part of Arts Lab’s Great Prison Art Exchange project

This exhibition brings together artwork from workshops inside the prison, individual pieces created in cells between sessions and work started in the prison and finished outside by Arts Lab artist Sara Downham-Lotto. Unless otherwise stated, all work will be for sale, the proceeds of which go towards sustaining the project.

Once a fortnight Arts Lab spends half a day at Dartmoor prison drawing and painting with 9 male safer custody prisoners. Not your standard art class and more facilitation than teaching, the group is encouraged to freely explore and experiment with different techniques and mediums. We usually have at least 3 or 4 activities planned for each 3 hour session. But depending on the mood of the group on the day and the direction that participants’ suggestions take us in, we can spend anything from 10-120 minutes on any new challenge. After a few sessions, our ‘mad ideas’ are trusted and everyone is comfortabe allowing the process to flow. Always looking and learning, often laughing,  often too, quiet and focussed, we work together, painting on cereal-box card, printing with pizza packaging, drawing with ink and sticks, writing in circles, splashing and dripping paint-loaded brushes onto large expanses of paper.
